the Journal of an Anonymous Soldier 25APR2004 0437 Dawn was approaching fast, the mission depended on the element of surprise. We had been on a road march since zero-hundred. A good two-hundred and fifty pounds strapped to my back and I was feeling it. In my knees and in my heels I didn't know how much longer I could take it. It was at the point that I started thinking about it that they all buckled down on me. Face first into the pavement. Leave me for dead, I'd rather that than pushing forward. There he was, the LT came having seen me collapse. He offered me his hand and told me that it wasn't much further. It was a small gesture, but it meant everything to me right then and there. He helped me to my feet and said the first and second step is always the hardest... the rest is all momentum. End Transmission. |
